The township of Heathcote is located 120km north of the capital Melbourne in the state of Victoria and was made famous when gold was discovered in 1850.

Within 2 weeks of the first gold strike, 16,000 prospectors had joined the rush, sinking shafts through the rich red Cambrian soil in their bid to find alluvial and gold bearing Greenstone quartz.
